Been a little… busy!

So this blog has gone a bit cold for a while, but I swear I’ve had a good reason. THIS:

Earlier this year, I gave birth to my first child, a lovely baby boy.  So unsurprisingly this did set back some health and writing goals, but I think it was worth it. ;-] However, I’ve just started to be able to make time for writing and such again. So here goes nothing, I’m going to try to start out slow. But it’s a total coincidence that this is just at the end of the last day of this ROW! So I can start fresh with the next one.

Bit by bit!

So here’s a recap of this week’s writing progress.

I haven’t made it to 4 hours this week either, but I still haven’t given up on that goal.  Another week or so more, and I may again have the energy to do it.  This week, got in 2 hours, but edited 3 scenes!  So I’m feeling good.  Also, best of all, I edited and reread the big scene with a fight in it from last week, and it wasn’t terrible!  Yay!  Or at least, if there were flaws, they were not immediately glaring at me on first reread.  Fight scene seemed like a good read.  So big success, if you ask me! =)  

Now if only I can get through rewriting the next big scene.  Darn the debt I accrued pushing forward without knowing what the heck I needed to say!  ;-]  Of course, perhaps I would have never gotten this far or figured out what I needed to say without doing so… who knows.  It’s a learning process.  But this learning process is pushing me more towards the planner on the planner vs pantser scale!  Heh. 

Fitness-wise, the hubby and I missed the gym on our second regularly scheduled day because we had to work late, but we made sure to go yesterday and make up for it.  Well, I did yoga at home–but that was even better than the gym!  We made our other day for this week, so goal met!

My goals as a reminder for myself:

  • Writing: 4 hours a week of editing. Complete at least one first pass of revising on one scene a week (and then some).
  • Health & Fitness: Gym twice a week. Bonus: Additional cardio once a week.

And in honor of the Olympics this week, remember, greatness is wherever somebody is trying to find it.


Well, this week I finally rewrote that big scene that’s been scaring me.  In the end, I ended up making it two scenes.  I’m not sure how it came out, but it’s certainly a start.  Hopefully I don’t completely hate it upon rereading in a week or so!  It’s a fight scene, and that might have been why I was a little intimidated.  I haven’t written many, especially not one with a lot of mystery going on and not a lot of clear you vs me conflict.  Hopefully it turned out okay!  I found this interesting article with tips for writing fight scenes, if anyone is interested.  Several were not that helpful, but I liked that one!

I missed Wednesday’s check-in, so on to my status for this week….  I only managed half an hour of editing on Tuesday, but that was better than nothing, and today I got in a whole 3 hours!  So that leaves me close to my goal at 3.5 hours for the week!  Works for me.  I’m really happy to be making progress again.  Feels SO good.

For exercise, overwhelming fatigue curtailed the gym on Monday.  First time I’ve missed in ages!  I went home after work and slept straight through till the next morning – lol!  But I did go in on Thursday and get a light workout.  The upstairs of our gym, where the treadmills and ellipticals are, seems to be having an AC problem because it’s like 5 degrees hotter than the lower floor!  So even though I had planned to walk on the treadmill, instead I went and lifted weights instead.  Only now doctor’s orders is less than 10 pound weights, so I feel a little silly since I normally lift much heavier weights for bigger muscles like back and legs.  But I did lots of reps and tried to tell myself that variation was a good thing. =)  And the fatigue should be lessening any day now!

So all in all, a pretty good week. 😀

New Goals for this ROW

Well, I’m a bit late to this round, but I’m not sitting out!  I discovered something lately that has probably been contributing to why I haven’t been getting my editing done — or much of anything else — but it’ll be a few more weeks before I can mention it. ;-]  The good news is, by then, it should be gone!

In the meantime, here are my new goals:

  • Writing: 4 hours a week of editing. Complete at least one first pass of revising on one scene a week (and then some).
  • Health & Fitness: Gym twice a week. Bonus: Additional cardio once a week.

And that’s it!  I want to focus down on what matters most this ROW.  I’m not getting any younger, and I want to see this novel in at least a form I feel proud of presenting! ;-]

Before I started ROW and while I was still trying to finish my first draft, I had also tried establishing some rewards for big word count milestones.  That really helped, so I think I’ll try it again for this ROW!

My Rewards:

  • 10 hours editing: A slice (or two!) of cheesecake (without guilt!)
  • 20 hours editing: Gratuitous notebook or CD purchase!
  • 30 hours editing: Special candle to burn while writing
  • 50 hours editing: Pedicure at a spa
  • Finishing a first pass edit on Mage Slave: priceless.  Just kidding! Reward is: Etsy jewelry purchase! woo hoo!

For today, I spent 2 hours editing, sitting outside on my patio swing while the hubster built a small fence to shade our air conditioner.  We both had a great time.  =)  Now I hope to do an hour or two more!

ROW80: Stumbling along…

Some updates on my current ROW80 goal progress:
  • Writing: Again, no editing progress. I’m stalled! Need to get that routine going again.
  • Health & Fitness: Gym holding steady – can do some great chin-ups now! Eating pretty much out of control. Need to get back on the wagon!
  • Game: Got the game’s menu drawn out and fully designed. Progress continues plodding along.
  • Reading: Again, big success!  Mostly just to say I checked something off my list before the end of the ROW, I focused down and finished Story Engineering.  Well worth the read, especially if you’re feeling a need to learn more about plot and structure as I was.

ROW80: At least I finished one thing….

  • Writing: I haven’t made much progress at all.  =(  I have to figure out a specific day of the week to devote to writing again, I think.  I never used to be a creature of routine and habit, but it does seem to be helping me make progress on my goals to set aside a day where I plan to work.  Problem is, I have a day designated for our game, but not really writing anymore since my original days got twisted around.  I need to get my writing desk cleaned and spiffed up, and set aside a day — maybe to be ready for the start of the next round!
  • Health & Fitness: I did hit the gym Monday, in spite of REALLY not feeling like it.  Will be going again tomorrow!
  • Game: We had a great 12 hour work session where we got our “money” system working, and I drew lots of cute little creatures for our game.  No screens done specifically, but much progress!
  • Reading: Biggest success of the week!  I finished If You Want to Write.  Highly recommended!  Finishing at least one thing felt great.

Here’s hoping I can make some more progress before Sunday to finish the ROW strong!

ROW80 Check-in: Sick!

I missed my last check-in, or two, I can’t even remember now!  But even though I’m a bit sick, I didn’t want to miss another check-in, so here it is!
  • Writing: Did get in one scene edited this week, but coming down with a stomach bug has curbed any productive activity this weekend! So frustrating!!
  • Health & Fitness: I replaced the gym one day this week with a massive gardening session where my hubby and I planted mint and basil and put stones around our little herb garden.  But I made it to the gym the other day! I haven’t tracked food at all, though, and now that I have this stomach bug both exercise and healthy eating are up in the air!
  • Game: Unfortunately our work day was supposed to be today–and ended up being cancelled due to my fever. =( I sat on the couch and watched movies all day.  I’m trying hard to encourage myself to just rest and get better, but I can’t help wishing to have gotten something fun or productive out of the weekend.  Sigh!
  • Reading: I haven’t even made progress on reading. Boo! 😉

Ah, well.  Next week is another week, eh?

ROW 80: Studying people

After missing Sunday’s check-in, I didn’t want to miss Wednesday, but I hate to post because I don’t have much progress to report!  I guess this is the accountability part hehe. =)  Of course, the key to making good goals is making them accomplishable… but I can’t help being ambitious. I want it all!

So, without further ado:

  • Writing: Again! I’m quite lacking this week. No progress. BOO! But I do have a long weekend coming to make up for it…! =D
  • Health & Fitness: At least I’m still going strong here, mostly. =) Still lazy at entering calories into Livestrong, need to get back on track, but hit the gym on Monday and did yardwork over the weekend to get at least a little cardio in.
  • Game: On this front, I’m still making tons of progress, though still not as fast as I’d like. Got the 4 major remaining screens wireframed, so now I can get around to laying out all the pieces and making them look awesome. Of course, there’s still plenty of other screens to get to. The hubster built out one piece over the weekend, and we found some flaws in the design and reworked them together. Which was awesome, and even though we were throwing some things out, it felt great to be really figuring out how to make things work! Also earlier in the week, I got to thinking that I don’t really understand my userbase as well as I should, so I got into doing some user research and personas (which is kind of like making up characters, based on real-ish people). Tonight I got really into that and read all about people that might be our target user base.  I think studying people helps refine both design and writing skills, so I feel pretty good about that.  But again, the game dominates my psyche!  Maybe that’s the right thing, for now….
  • Reading: Read a tad more of If You Want to Write… and stalked Brenda Ueland on goodreads, wikipedia. This is seriously one fantastic book! I can’t believe I never heard of it before.

So, that’s it!  Wish me luck getting in some writing over the long weekend!

ROW 80: Been better, been worse

One of my worse weeks from a writing perspective… but lots of game design and such done!

  • Writing: Not so good this week. =( Virtually no progress. I’ll try to do double for Sunday to make up for it! At least 2 scenes revised, I hope!
  • Health & Fitness: Gym was great! Inclined bench and some on the bike – my upper back and shoulders are aching, in a good way.  Have gotten lazy at entering calories into Livestrong, but I’m still mentally keeping track.  Need to kick start that again though!
  • Game: Awesome progress! Got our website updated, updated our twitter feed, thought of some new game ideas, activated my shiny new company debit card! No sketches but I’m itching to get to them! I’ve also started investigating trademarks and how to get one and all that jazz.
  • Reading: Also not much here. Sigh. Sometimes the game hogs all the attention! 😉

Wish me luck at making more writing progress this weekend! =) Diablo III isn’t helping anything! hehe!

ROW Check-in – A loss of momentum

Well, I’m here to check in – returned from Germany!  I made more progress in Germany than I thought I would, and had a harder time getting back into the swing of things and recovering from the trip than I’d anticipated!  So… not very much to update with this post but I thought I’d update all the same.

  • Writing: I did get some sporadic editing in over the last few weeks of no internet and planned missed check-ins, but it wasn’t nothing, so at least there’s that!  I think I did about one scene and a lot of reading and updating my scene list spreadsheet, trying to figure out the right way to rewrite one of the early first scenes.  Today with Mother’s Day I took the time to spend with my mom, mother-in-law, and grama, and it was nice to just have a relaxing dinner with them and make them happy. =) Didn’t leave much time for writing, but it was worth it.  Hopefully this week I’ll be back on track!
  • Health & Fitness: I’ve kept up the gym, but not the cardio as much. While I was traveling for work, there were no gyms or fitness rooms or anything so I walked all over the little German town we were in and tried to burn adequate calories for all the deli meat, baguette rolls, beer, and wine that is common in German food!  It worked because I lost some weight there – imagine that!  Unfortunately I’ve gained a pound or two back, but we’ll work on that. ;-]
  • Game: Continued progress. I got some new scenes sketched, started thinking about levels, and a few other things. We also wrapped up some business type things like opening our bank account – pretty sweet! That was surprisingly fun – best time I’ve ever had at a bank! hehe!
  • Reading: I read an immense amount on my trip, at nights and on plane rides.  I’m more than two-thirds of the way through If You Want to Write… I highly, highly recommend it, I think I’ve learned a lot!  It’s a weird old book, and wanders around, and you wonder if she’s going to get to the point, and then bam! That’s enlightening!  Highly recommended.

So… I’m struggling to get back on track with all my goals and normal life… Maybe if we can just finish this laundry… =]
